You may have heard that hip and knee replacement can now often be done as "outpatient" surgery. Here's what that actually means, and what determines whether it's the right option for you.
The Basics
Outpatient joint replacement means going home the same day as your surgery, rather than staying overnight in the hospital. It's become increasingly common as surgical techniques, anesthesia, and pain management have all improved — but it isn't the right fit for every patient, and that's a decision made together with your surgical team.
What Determines the Difference
Most patients go home the same day or spend one night in the hospital. Pain control, medical comorbidities, and patient preference all factor into that decision.
Is It Safe?
Outpatient joint replacement is possible today because of real advances: less invasive surgical approaches, more effective pain management that gets patients moving sooner, and better anesthesia protocols. Before going home, every patient is evaluated by Dr. Pallitto, nursing staff, and physical therapy to confirm they're ready.
Good to Know
No — you'll need a family member or friend with you at home, especially in the first day or two after surgery.
Dr. Pallitto and his entire team are available for post-discharge support, including coordinating home health services if needed.
