Packing for hip or knee replacement is different from packing for a typical hospital stay. Here's a simple checklist to help you get ready.

The Essentials

What to Pack

  • Photo ID and insurance card
  • A current list of medications, including dosages
  • Loose, comfortable clothing — think elastic waistbands and clothes that are easy to get on and off over a healing joint
  • Supportive, slip-on shoes — you'll be walking soon after surgery, and bending down to tie laces isn't easy at first
  • Your phone and charger
  • Any assistive device you already use — a cane or walker, if applicable
  • A case for glasses, hearing aids, or dentures, if you use them

What to Leave at Home

Keep It Simple

Leave jewelry, large amounts of cash, and other valuables at home. Most patients only stay one night at most, so there's no need to overpack — a small bag is usually plenty.

Before You Go

Confirm the Details With Your Care Team

You'll complete pre-operative testing and medical clearance before surgery, and your care team will confirm exact fasting instructions, which medications to pause, and what to bring or leave at home for your specific procedure and facility.

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to bring my own pain medication?

No — your surgical team manages pain medication during your stay. Bring a list of what you currently take so your care team has a complete picture, but you don't need to bring the medications themselves.
